Wheels On Trails
14 November 2023 – Klondike Snowmobile Association
Now that winter has landed throughout the Yukon, it’s time for a friendly reminder that wheeled vehicles are not to be used on the Yukon’s multi-use trails during the snow season, and this rule enforceable from November 1st through March 31st.
We love to share the trails with as many people as possible, however wheel ruts left in the snow are dangerous to other trail users, so for the safety of all trail users please do not cause wheel ruts in the trails. Snowmobilers, skiers, runners, dog teams, and other winter trail users can all easily be injured if they get caught in your rut.
In addition to safety concerns, wheel ruts are also a huge waste of volunteer time. There are several non-profit clubs and associations that together maintain and groom the Yukon’s multi-use trail system for everyone’s winter-use enjoyment, and the vast majority of this trail grooming is accomplished by unpaid volunteers who are donating their own free time. All too often it takes these volunteers several hours to re-groom a trail after just one wheel vehicle has gone through, and those are volunteer hours and non-profit resources that could have been used to groom other trails.
Please do not operate wheel vehicles on the multi-use trails during the snow season. Quads and side by sides can be fitted with tracks for those who wish to use them during winter, or even better consider getting yourself a snowmobile! If you see any wheels on the multi-use trails in the Whitehorse area please report it to the City’s 24-7 trouble line at 867 667 2111.
We thank everyone for their co-operation, and encourage everyone to dust off your favourite winter gear and get out to enjoy the snow!
