January 2025 Trails Update
22 January 2025 – Klondike Snowmobile Association
Snowmobiling is happening in the Yukon! We have a few trail related updates to pass along…
Whitehorse area: Most trails are in fair to good condition. Some of the more popular trails are getting moguled due to high volumes of snowmobile traffic and a lack of fresh snow recently. Snow pack is good most areas. Caution Fish Lake area trails and some other higher elevation areas have been developing wind drifts in recent days. Most lakes are now good for snowmobile traffic. Two of our three groomers are now back from repairs and our volunteers are getting out and grooming as their time allows.
Copper Haul: The City of Whitehorse has repaired the Fish Lake Road / Copper Haul gate and has recently installed a new gate at the McLean Lake Road / Copper Haul intersection. One of our volunteers was out there recently with our Kubota groomer and the centre few metres of the Copper Haul is now in great condition. Caution wheel ruts in the snow on either side of the groomed section.
McLean Lake Road: The City of Whitehorse recently installed a new gate at the top of the McLean Lake Road where it meets the Copper Haul, as the old one was vandalized beyond repair. Due to the steep ditches and winter conditions they were unable to install the new gate with enough space for snowmobiles to go around, so for the remainder of this season all snowmobile traffic from this area will have to access the Copper Haul by way of the McLean Lake Trail instead of the McLean Lake Road.
Dawson City area: Snow is great in the Dawson area! Some trails are becoming either moguled or overgrown with brush now that it’s been a few seasons since the Sled Dawgs club closed, however many trails and riding areas are still in fair to good condition, and the ice road across the Yukon River is open for access to the Top of the World side.
Upcoming Trail Events: February 1-8 2025, the Yukon Quest will be taking place, starting in Teslin and travelling Teslin Lake’s northeast shore, South Canol Road, Deno Cho Trail to Faro, and return. Yukon Quest kindly asks that other recreational trail users avoid these areas during this time. February 22-23 the Dog Powered Sports Association of the Yukon (DPSAY) are hosting a new race for dog and human powered sports on the Dawson Overland Trail from Takhini Crossing to Braeburn and return. They are kindly asking trail users not involved in the race to avoid the area if possible on these dates. Thank you!
As usual, all of our latest trail condition reports are posted on our Current Trail Conditions page at https://ksa.yk.ca/trails/trail-conditions. Please help us keep it up to date by sending in a report after your rides!
